This was the question raised when addressing a group of medical professionals last week. The medical curriculum has changed acknowledging that whilst technical knowledge and skills are crucial and fundamentally important, they are not enough on their own (equally relevant in world of business).
Changes are afoot within the NHS as it seeks to address the quality, productivity and efficiency challenge. Building good relationships with patients and colleagues, accepting shared accountability for services provided, working with others to change systems and processes…. are required for better outcomes for patients (and the tax payer!).
All of which requires a shift in mindset, challenging the status quo and hierarchy, doing things differently and ultimately being an agent of change. Preparing tomorrow’s doctors today equips them with the skills, attitudes and behaviours that they will need to bring about effective change.
So I hear you ask what does this have to do with me?
The context may be different but whether you run a business, lead a team, an organisation, a community group…there will be times when you will need to bring about change, gain commitment and support from others in doing things differently, to step up and take the initiative…
You can’t make someone be a change agent; it has to come from within. My first taste of leading a radical change initiative was within the workplace back in the 90’s. I remember it well because despite its challenges, emotional toil, steep learning curve… it stretched and tested me in a way which has shaped who I have become.
You don’t have to be a leader or hold a position of status to step up and make a difference. Anyone can take the initiative and be responsible for creating positive change in the workplace, community, world….what you may need is:
– A strong conviction to do something about the current reality
– A picture in your mind’s eye of what a different reality / future could look like
– The courage to take action
– Resilience and a relentlessness attitude to keep going despite resistance and challenges
– To be emotionally engaged and connected with people who can help you
And for most, just have a strong passion to ‘do something’ will fuel the change, the rest you will gain as you go along. So go on, BE BOLD and dare to make a difference – you will be surprised at what you can make happen
What has been your experience of taking the change initiative?
What fuelled your desire to act?
What would you add to the above?
I would love to hear your experiences…
