Invest in mothers:  A call to action from CSW68

A call to change the narrative: Invest in Mothers #CSW68

My brief takeaways from this rich and encouraging UN Women discussion with such an inspiring panel.

Did you know that are 2.2 billion mothers in the world?

The world’s biggest ‘profession’ that is unpaid …. mothers run the most demanding startup, serve as primary caregivers, nurturers, educators, role models, enhance child development outcomes, influence the future of society, transmit cultural values, build communities…..and the list goes on…….mothers are indispensable agents of progress, growth, positive change in the world… ❤️

Investing in mothers is imperative, because in doing so we have a chance of:
· breaking the cycle of poverty (1 in 10 women live in extreme poverty and on less than $1.90 a day)
· creating a transformative ripple effect that extends beyond individual households
· shifting the world to a more caring one

Backing mothers and other unpaid care givers is not an expense. It is an investment in people, their well being and the future of the human race.

Economic activity, data and stats ignore the work that mothers do in the home….this invisible labour is not only critical but essential to the functioning of society.

It was the first time I heard the concept of  ’care privilege’ ….. the advantages stemming from access to affordable childcare, social support, supportive workplace policies, paid parental leave, flexible working hours.
Yet, countless women are unable to access these privileges, hindering their ability to enter the workforce.

The current system is undeniably stacked against mothers, and it’s time for a radical shift. We need to dismantle these systemic barriers and create a more equitable world for mothers everywhere.

As a mother of two incredible children, this discussion served as a poignant reminder of the crucial role mothers play in our world.
A massive shoutout to all you mothers out there 🌟
