When things go wrong change your attitude

There are times in our lives when we are the pigeons and other times when we become the statute. This week it has been the latter. When things go wrong everything else seem to follow the same path. Our subconscious plays havoc with our emotions resurfacing all the ‘not so good’ things that happened in the past. It is easy to get swamped by them and lose perspective and context.

I was sharply reminded of the bigger picture yesterday when I read Mum’s List. It tells the poignant story of a mother who before she died created a list of things for her husband to do for and with her 2 young children. It’s a heart warming and uplifting story and I dare you to read it without shedding a tear.

Stories (and blogs) can help us to change we way we think, act and feel. They enable us to share our experiences, understand each other, and communicate meaning and the power to break down barriers.

In the run up to International Women’s Day and in collaboration with Janet Bebb, we are collecting stories of ordinary women who have in some extraordinary way helped to shape your life – perhaps they have inspired you, sacrificed for you, given you help, courage, hope, support; opened doors and created opportunities for you, believed in you when no else would… These will be uploaded on to our specially created blog on the 8th of March to inspire, connect and engage with women from Yorkshire and beyond. So if you have a story to share we would love to hear it.

Again I used Twitter (the same place where I found the person who provided poor service) to help me source photographs for the blog. And it was here that I met Nicky Busby and through our Twitter conversations found some pictures for the blog. She spent considerable time and effort in finding the right ones and in formatting them into the specified pixels so that they could fit the Header. And my faith in humanity was once again restored.

One of her photographs that caught my eye was this one of a gate and the stunning vista ahead. It beckons you to go through it and discover what lies ahead. There may be potholes, bogs and obstructions but like life it goes on…It’s ours for the making and what we make of it… and as Viktor Frankl said ‘ The last of human freedoms – the ability to choose one’s attitude in a given set of circumstances’
