5 tips for better decision making

How effective are you at making critical decisions?

In my last post , I shared some insights from McKinsey’s findings on the importance of organisational health for sustained performance and success, where decision-making emerged as a crucial skill.

We’ve all face critical moments where decisions carry significant weight, yet effectively navigating them can be challenging.

And I’m sure that we’ve all made poor decisions at some point in our lives, even seasoned leaders!

I’ve certainly made many and can recall a time when hastily launching a new project without adequate team input leading to inefficiencies and dissatisfaction.

This experience highlighted the importance of informed decision-making and collaboration.

Sharing some strategies that I have developed and tested over the years:

1.  Embracing a systematic approach: Gather relevant information, analyse potential outcomes and consider the perspectives of key stakeholders. By leveraging data-driven insights, you are more likely to make well-informed decisions that align with organisational objectives.

2.  Empowering team members: Encourage team members and colleagues to contribute their insights, strengthening decision outcomes and promoting a sense of ownership and engagement within the team. Encouraging participation from team members with varied backgrounds and expertise fosters creativity and innovation.

3.  Balancing speed and thoroughness: While timely decisions are essential, make sure you allocate sufficient time for analysis and evaluation. By striking this balance, you can mitigate risks and capitalise on opportunities more effectively.

4.  Being mindful of cognitive biases: Awareness of biases such as confirmation bias or groupthink allows you to approach decisions with greater objectivity and discernment.

5.  Learning from experience: Conduct post-decision evaluations, reflect on outcomes to glean insights and use them to refine your approach
